Pfizer, which has been in talks about pursuing its patent for Viagra, said: "The drug has never been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The development of Viagra has been a priority for Pfizer, our leading impotence drug. It is an exciting development that will have significant implications for pharmaceutical companies in the UK."
Viagra has been approved by the EMA and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to treat erectile dysfunction, with the drug also being tested in the US for potential use in treating Parkinson's disease.
Pfizer said: "Viagra is an innovative medication that offers the advantages of fast-acting, convenient administration and a wide range of indications, particularly in the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis.
"We believe it will be a useful treatment option for patients with Parkinson's disease who may be reluctant to take the medication."
Viagra was originally developed to treat erectile dysfunction in men by impotence drug, sildenafil (Viagra Connect) which had been developed to treat erectile dysfunction by the same drug.
